🔍 What is Carbon Equivalent (CE)?

Carbon Equivalent (CE) is a critical parameter used to evaluate the weldability of steel. It combines the effect of carbon and alloying elements into a single value. A higher CE indicates greater hardness and a higher risk of weld cracking.

📐 Carbon Equivalent Formulas

AWS Method

CE = C + Mn6 + (Cr + Mo + V)5 + (Ni + Cu)15

AWS Method (conservative version)

CE = C + (Mn + Si)6 + (Cr + Mo + V)5 + (Ni + Cu)15

IIW Method

CE = C + Mn6 + (Cr + Mo + V)5 + (Ni + Cu)15

PCM Method

CE = C + Si30 + Mn20 + Cu20 + Ni60 + Cr20 + Mo15 + V10 + 5B

CET Method

CE = C + (Mn + Mo)10 + (Cr + Cu)20 + Ni40

(Defined by International Institute of Welding)

⚙️ Why CE Calculation is Important?

  • ✔ Determines steel weldability
  • ✔ Predicts crack formation risk
  • ✔ Helps select correct preheat temperature
  • ✔ Ensures structural integrity and safety
  • ✔ Used in industrial welding standards (AWS, ASME)
